History & Heritage of Ramabanta Trading Post
From Early Trading Post
to Modern Guest Services
“Approximately a century ago, a network of trading posts was established by (foreign) entrepreneurs who procured crops, cattle, wool, and mohair from the largely rural local Basotho population, then selling these commodities into established markets in South Africa. As commerce developed, the traders began selling goods to the Basotho and added services such as post offices, animal husbandry, grain milling, fuel and liquor sales, and monthly clinics. Generally, a good and friendly relationship was enjoyed by all as the traders were a free-spirited bunch who understood the trials and tribulations of living in such a remote region. Also, most of them could speak Sesotho.”- Gill Lange
John Thorn (known as Baseane) established the Roma Trading Post in 1903 and then further expanded his trading post footprint by opening trading stations in villages including Ramabanta, Makhaleng, Thaba Tseka, and Nyakosoba. The fifth generation of the Thorn Family partnered with the McCarthy family to co-own and manage Ramabanta lodge. After the Covid pandemic, the McCarthy family took full ownership of Ramabanta Trading Post and are working to honour and preserve the rich history at Ramabanta Trading Post whilst offering guests the best possible service and amenities and build enduring relationships within the local community.
